A Punjab and Haryana high court division bench comprising justice Hemant Gupta issued a notice to oil companies on a petition challanging petroleum rules.

A Hoshiarpur resident approached the high court challenging rules whereby the petroleum companies do not allow filling of diesel in open containers from petrol pumps in the state.

The petitioner, DS Dadwal, said diesel was used in combines and other machines for reaping crops. To procure diesel in containers from filling stations was not permissible under the petroleum rules, he said. Rules say containers should be approved by the chief controller of explosives whereas there was no such mandate in the act, the petitioner said.

He said farmers in Punjab were dependent on diesel due to frequent power cuts. He said directions should be issued to oil companies to allow filling of containers from petrol stations.

A division bench fixed the next date of hearing on April 6.
