Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has blamed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre for the rotting of wheat grains in the state.
The state government was only a facilitator of the union government in purchasing food grains, Badal told the media here on Sunday, adding that the responsibility of proper storage, lifting, and movement was of the Centre.
"In spite of my personal requests to the union government, the state had no permission for creating new silos for storing the grain," said the CM. "Our farmers' fruit of labour is getting spoiled."
Asked about the statement of union minister Pawan Bansal about the Centre's proposal to move the subject of water from the state list to the concurrent list of the constitution, the CM said it would be against the basic spirit of federalism and a step to weaken the states further.
He said the measure would lead to widespread resentment in the states. "The home minister didn't discuss the issue either formally or informally in the Northern Zonal Council meeting. All CMs present were in dark about it," he added. "The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will oppose it."
