The Punjab Congress staged a protest near education minister Sikander Singh Maluka's house at Sukhna enclave at Kansal village near here on Wednesday.
The Congress led by MLA Jagmohan Singh Kang demanded Maluka's resignation for various acts of omission and commission in the education department, including purchase of books for libraries with objectionable content at exorbitant rates from an unknown publisher and the science kits scam.
The Punjab and Chandigarh police had made elaborate security arrangements at all entry points leading to Maluka's house to prevent gathering of the Congress protesters. Still a sizeable number of Congress workers reached near Maluka's house for the protest.
Speaking on the occasion, Kang said even if the financial bungling running into crores of rupees in the education department was left aside for a moment, it was disgusting and unfortunate that by supplying books with incriminating and double-meaning literature, the minister was playing with the future of schoolchildren.
Similarly, the science kits and map masters scam was an example of the rampant corruption in the department, he said, adding that this was only the tip of the iceberg and after a free and fair inquiry, many skeletons would tumble out of the cupboard.
Kang demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI so that truth could be known and corruption reined in. He termed the holding of the inquiry into this scam by a retired judge as a mere eyewash.
Kang said the Punjab Congress would be forced to go on a chain fast in case the government failed to order a CBI probe in a week's time.
