Punjab crosses wheat procurement target

Punjab crossed the wheat procurement target of 115 lakh tonnes on May 18 despite tough weather conditions and untimely rain. Stating this on Monday, an official spokesman said the procurement process of wheat in the state was going on in full swing, with various government agencies and private millers procuring more than 115.63 lakh tonnes of wheat till Sunday evening against 110.32 lakh tonnes procured on the corresponding day last year.

The procurement process is being carried out in 1,757 procurement centres across the state. The government spokesman claimed that Rs 14,378.21 crore had already been paid to farmers.

The spokesman added that of the total procurement of 115.63 lakh tones, government agencies had procured 112.85 lakh tonnes, whereas private traders procured 2.77 lakh tonnes of wheat. Till May 18, Markfed procured 25.1 lakh tonnes (21.7%), Punsup 23.8 lakh tonnes (20.6%), Pungrain 13.8 lakh tonnes (12%), Punjab State Warehousing Corporation (PSWC) 13 lakh tonnes (11.3%), and Punjab Agro Industries Corporation (PAIC) 12.29 lakh tonnes (9.8%). The central government agency, the Food Corporation of India (FCI), procured 18 lakh tonnes (15.6%).

Sangrur district is leading in procurement with 10.16 lakh tonnes, followed by Ludhiana district (8.92 lakh tonnes) and Bathinda district (8.3 lakh tonnes).
