The Punjab government on Thursday directed all district police chiefs to lodge first information reports (FIRs) against e-commerce companies selling e-cigarettes via online shopping portals despite the ban.

Health minister Surjit Kumar Jyani called upon the people to cooperate with police in registering FIRs against e-commerce companies on the basis of bills of e-cigarette products sent by these companies. The minister said there was no check on the sale of cigarettes through the internet. In order to implement the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) effectively, all drug inspectors have been directed to initiate complaints against the illegal sale of e-cigarettes, while district police chiefs have been directed to ensure prompt action on the complaints.
