The Punjab government on Tuesday decided to maintain monuments of religious importance to Muslims, under a joint project undertaken by India and Pakistan.

As per the project, the government would maintain religious monuments of Muslim in Punjab while the Pakistan government would preserve such religious monuments in the neighbouring country, stated minister of state for Tourism and Jail Sohan Singh Thandal.

Talking to mediapersons at the residence of senior SAD leader Devinder Singh Bappu in Sirhind during a personal trip to the city, he said the state would spend Rs 8 crore under the World Bank project for preserving the religious monuments.

Thandal said the state had already undertaken the task of identifying such monuments, including the Roza Sharief in Fatehgarh Sahib. The minister said that keeping in view the religious and historic importance of Fatehgarh Sahib the state government was giving special attention to the district.

He said Punjab had moved up to the 12th position from being number 28 in the tourism sector after the state government’s initiative to promote tourism.

In the next two years, further steps will be undertaken to improve the sector, he said.

He also said the government would develop the historic Aam Khas Bhag and set up booths selling food and other items.

He said the government was considering giving on lease the Floating Restaurant on GT road in Sirhind which provided food to Pakistan-bound passengers as it was running in a loss.

In a move to attract tourists through economical accommodation, the government would soon issue licenses to start ‘bed and breakfast’ services in Punjab, he claimed.

He said a delegation from the Punjab Tourism department would participate in the meetings to be held in Delhi and Ahmedabad on August 21 and 23 to 25, respectively. A delegation would soon visit Singapore to acquaint itself with the country’s tourism policies.
