A national-level hockey player was killed and four others were injured in a hit-and-run accident on the GT Road near Bhattmajra village in Fatehgarh Sahib district on Sunday morning.

Gurkirat Singh (20), a resident of Sector 44, Chandigarh, was killed, while Narinder Kumar (45), Ashish Kumar (18), Pardeep Kumar (23) and Munish Kumar (24), all residents of Zirakpur, sustained injured and were hospitalised.

The police said Narinder and Munish were referred to Chandigarh due to their critical condition. Ashish and Pardeep were admitted to the Fatehgarh Sahib civil hospital.

Investigating officer Parmar Singh of the Sirhind police station said the five were going to Ludhiana in an SUV (sports utility vehicle) to attend a wedding when a truck collided with their vehicle.

Gurkirat, who was driving, lost control and hit a divider near the flyover. He was killed on the spot.

A case was registered against the unidentified truck driver, who sped away from the spot.

Gurkirat was part of the Chandigarh team for the under-19 school nationals last year. He had earlier participated in the under-17 national school championship.

His parents alleged that the police neither gave first aid to the victims nor reached the spot in time.

They also accused the police of delaying the post-mortem at the Fatehgarh civil hospital by concentrating on legal formalities.
