The city police have issued directions to shopkeepers at the wholesale cracker market near grain market, asking them to abide by the law.

Assistant commissioner of police (north) Swapan Sharma on Wednesday visited the market and asked the shopkeepers to abide by the set procedures in case of any emergency.

Sharma along with other police officials reached the market in the afternoon and inspected all shops which had been set up there.

Hindustan Times had earlier reported that norms were being flouted at the cracker market as there was lack of fire-fighting engines, fire-fighting equipment among other things which were required in case of emergency.

"All electrical fittings which have been done in the cracker market should have been done by a trained person and not an amateur so that there was no risk of sparking in wires and other electrical equipment in the area which could trigger fire," he added.

Sharma further said the shopkeepers in the market should not employ any minor for work, including loading, unloading among other works.

"The licence of the shop will be cancelled in case it is found that a minor has been employed," he added.

He said four water tankers should also be stationed in the area so that in case of fire it could be doused easily.

He added that no cracker should be put below the electricity wires and an ambulance should be stationed in the market area.

Police officials later demonstrated a drill to the shopkeepers in case of emergency. They said crackers from two shops adjacent to the shop under fire should be removed immediately so that it could be stopped from spreading.

Sharma also asked the shopkeepers not to allow private vehicles to be parked inside the market. "Ropes should be tied at the entry point of the market so that no private vehicle enters the market and blocks the route."

Traffic inspector Beant Juneja who accompanied Swapan Sharma asked the police officials to remove vehicles from inside the market.
