The Punjab state election commission on Friday announced to hold the elections to six municipal corporations on February 22, still holding silence over the much-awaited elections to the 123municipal committees across the state.
The six corporations to go for the polls on February 22 included Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Moga, SAS Nagar and Bathinda.
Besides, the by-polls would also be held on February 22 for ward no. 49 (general) of Jalandhar municipal corporation, ward no. 8 (OBC) and 46 (general) of the Patiala municipal corporation.
The last date for making nominations for these corporation elections and the said bye elections of different wards is February 11, 2015. The scrutiny would be done the following day and the February 13 is the last date for the withdrawal.
The counting would take place on February 26, state election commissioner SS Brar stated.
“The commission notification in this regard will be issued on Saturday (07.02.2015) when the model code of conduct will also be subsequently come into effect,” the state election commissioner said in a statement here.
Brar pointed out that the model code would be enforced only in the areas where the polls would take place.
This means that the code would not be applicable in the 123 municipal committees that also included Dhuri town MC. This holds significance in the light of the Dhuri assembly seat lying vacant for the by-election following Arvind Khanna’s resignation from there.
