The Punjab government on Thursday demanded state-specific schemes with the central funding for houses for the economically-weaker sections (EWS), as the deputy chief minister even mooted a proposal in this direction to construct such one lakh houses in the next three years.

Addressing a national conclave, 'Housing for all', in Delhi on Thursday, the deputy CM, who also holds the housing portfolio, said the state government had made a social commitment to its people to construct one lakh houses for the weaker sections. The state had already created a land bank of 300 acres for the purpose that would expectedly increase in the next one year, he added.

Pointing out that the state's policy wherein all developers in Punjab hand over 5% of their gross area to the government for houses for the EWS, he said the government was also going in for the public-private partnership in the housing projects for the poor.

He proposed that the Centre could create a special corpus fund in which excise revenue collected from the sale of construction material could be deposited. This revenue, he said, could then be transferred to the states for subsidising housing for weaker sections.

Sukhbir also proposed exempting the urban development authorities like GMADA and GLADA from income tax.

He also demanded reduction in interest rate on housing loans, saying this single step would help the needy families have their own houses. The deputy CM laid emphasis on speedy resumption of financing all the pending projects that were taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM).
