The Punjab government on Wednesday informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that it had recommended local bodies’ polls in the state in two phases.
Punjab advocate general Ashok Aggarwal told the court that the local bodies department had recommended civic body polls in two phases by February 20 and 25 next year. The department has recommended holding the polls to six municipal corporations by February 20 and that of 123 other civic bodies by February 25.
The HC was further informed that the communication in this regard had been sent to the state election commission.
Following the submissions, the division bench of justice SK Mittal dismissed the suo motu proceedings initiated by the high court. The HC had taken suo motu notice of the state government’s failure to hold the MC elections despite the completion of their respective tenures in July last year.
