Punjab is all set to computerise records of new arms licences within a year by using a specialised software in its police commissionerates and all districts.

The ministry of home affairs has made it mandatory for all state police departments to make records available online through the arms information software while issuing new licences, ministry under secretary Molay Sangal said on Tuesday.

The aim was to computerise entire record of arms licensing system in the country and Punjab was the first state to implement such a project, he said while addressing police officials from Punjab and Haryana at a workshop.

Besides this, old records would be made available online in the next three years, he said.

On the occasion, Punjab home secretary Sameer Kumar said that the state will have a centralised database of arms licences issued in the state with the implementation of this software.

Making the process of issuance of arms licences fully transparent, this system would help in eliminating corruption and tracing criminal cases, he said
