Education minister Sikander Singh Maluka on Tuesday said 1,073 more edusat computer laboratories would be established in the state-run government schools.

The minister said 1,016 edusat classrooms had already been established with 516 satellite interaction terminals and 500 receive-only terminals in various government secondary schools.

He said 2,807 more receive-only terminals would be provided in government schools in the next phase. As many as 2,600 receive-only terminals had started functioning and senior secondary and high schools would be covered under this network. He said a special programme on career counselling and a health programme would also be conducted every week on Saturday.

A new programme 'Meet a Scientist' has been started by the edusat in which scientists from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) interacted with the students studying in government schools through the edusat system.

The minister said various incentive programmes, such as tele-teaching, aimed at creating awareness and interest towards science subjects among students of government schools.

It was said that IISER had suggested that a laboratory under the Punjab edusat could be set up where students could do experiments at their own level.

Expressing satisfaction over the edusat system providing tele-teaching in government schools, the education minister said the Punjab Edusat Society had provided free coaching tele-services to class-12 students of medical and non-medical streams for competitive examination who were unable to pay fees of private coaching centres. He said over 13,000 students of class 12 participated in the crash course and the result was 82% in government and aided schools in the state.

The programme of a regular course for students of classes 8 to 12 is being telecast daily in schools. He said 100 episodes had already prepared under the soft skill programme for students of class 9 and above through the edusat programme.
