The Punjab government will launch a scheme of bed and breakfast accommodation managed by Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board (PHTPB).

This scheme is aimed at providing tourists with comfortable home stay facilities on a par with international standards. The guidelines for launch are formed and would be advertised for inviting applications. More details are available on the official website of the tourism department (punjabtourism.gov.in).

A spokesman of the government said on Sunday that based on the United Nations World Tourism Organization's tourism development master plan, emphasis would be on identifying high-quality accommodations that catered to holiday visitors to the state's main tourist destinations. The objective is to give overseas and domestic visitors clean and comfortable stay with a Punjabi family for a true taste of the state's traditions, culture and cuisine.

In the first phase, the scheme would be launched in the urban areas of Amritsar, Patiala and Mohali districts. The houses or bungalows under consideration should be in an accessible area with adequate parking space, maximum six good-size bedrooms with attached washrooms and spacious living room.

Every house has to be furnished to international specifications. The tariff will be the owner's discretion.

The PHTPB would register homes after inspection and interview, monitor quality through independent inspection, and train home owners. Four parties would be involved in the selection procedure.
