Punjab U-19 in cricket final

Punjab under-19 team defeated Mumbai by eight wickets to enter the final of the JY Lele Memorial Cricket Tournament at Reliance Cricket Ground in Vadodara, on Saturday. Batting first, Mumbai were bowled out for 178.

Punjab’s right arm medium pacer Abhinav Sharma trapped opener G Bistha in front of the wicket before the batsman could open his account. Bombay kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were 37 for 3 in 14.5 overs. Sairaj Patil made 61 off 83 balls studded with eight boundaries and two sixes, while AK Jaffar scored 61 off 65 balls with one boundary and three sixes to help Mumbai score above 150-run mark.

KA Dafedar added 24 off 25 balls with three boundaries. For Punjab, medium pacer Abhinav Sharma (3 for 28) and off spinner Sukhwinder Singh (3 for 24) were the most successful bowlers.

Chasing, Punjab openers Karan Sharma and Sanvir Singh put on 38 runs for the opening stand. Karan was caught by S Mulani off K Kothari for 24. Sanvir Singh and Bhagmender Singh then added 61 runs for the second wicket. Bhagmender was castled by J Bistha for 21. At this stage, skipper Anmolpreet Singh joined opener Sanvir Singh. The duo were involved in a unbroken stand of 83 runs for the third wicket which took the Punjab team past the winning total.

Punjab scored 182 for two wickets. Sanvir Singh went on to complete unbeaten 101 off 85 balls studded with 13 boundaries and two huge sixes, while Anmolpreet Singh remained unbeaten on 26 off 38 balls.Punjab will play the final on September 29.
