Punjab women enter semifinals of National Hockey Championship

Hockey Punjab defeated Hockey Kerala 10-2 to enter the semifinals of the 5th Senior Women National Division A Championship at Saifai in Uttar Pradesh on Friday.

In other matches, Hockey Jharkhand defeated Assam Hockey 10-1 to book berth in the semifinals, while Hockey Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh Hockey played a 1-1 draw. In the last match, The Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd outplayed Hockey Bhopal 6-2.

Punjab’s Navpreet Kaur scored the first goal in the third minute of the game. Five minutes later Gurjit Kaur scored the second goal to double the lead 2-0. Pooja Rani trebled the lead with a penalty stroke conversion in the 17th minute of the game. Thereafter Gurjit Kaur struck two consecutive field goals in the 20th and 25th minute to swell the lead 5-0.

Ramandeep Kaur (27th min), Gurjit Kaur (28th min) added to the goal glut as Kerala defense was left in tatters. Just before half time Kerala Hockey managed to open its account with a goal from Anjali Abraham in the 29th minute of the match. In the second half Navpreet Kaur added the eighth goal for Punjab in the 36th minute through a penalty corner conversion. Kerala Hockey reduced the margin in the 47th minute through Vismaya A, but Punjab pumped in two more goals to seal the match.
