chandigarh Updated: Jul 15, 2014 23:25 IST

A Punjabi-origin Canadian man is facing charges of aggravated assault on his wife in Canada, the media reported. Baldev Singh Kalsi, 66, president of the Brookside gurdwara in Surrey city in western Canada’s British Columbia province, was arrested after his wife was found in severe medical distress at their home on Sunday, the Global News reported on Monday.

Subsequently, Kalsi has been charged with one count of aggravated assault for incurring life-threatening injuries to his wife. The woman is currently fighting for her life and is on life support, the authorities said. Police received a call on Sunday that a woman was in distress at a house in South Surrey. When they arrived at the scene, they found the woman with life-threatening injuries.

The victim was transported to hospital by a British Columbia air ambulance. Kalsi will appear before a Surrey court on Wednesday. Canada’s integrated homicide investigation team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation.
