A man from Punjab has been murdered in Greece. NRI Surjit Singh alias Rana, 39, a native of Cheema Kalan village in Phillaur sub-division, was reportedly abducted and later murdered by assailants in Crete region of Greece on Saturday. Onbe person has reportedly been arrested for the crime.
Harjinder Kaur, the wife of the deceased, on Sunday told UNI at her in-laws' house here that her husband was residing in Greece for the past nine years. About 10 days ago, she received a phone call from her husband that he had been kidnapped by some people, who were demanding 20,000 Euro as ransom.
She said she had then received phone calls from the kidnappers too, but before she could arrange the money, she received a phone call from the granthi of a gurdwara of Crete who told her that the body of her husband was found buried in a house in the town.
Kaur said the granthi further told her on the phone that the Greece Police had exhumed the body and kept it in a mortuary of a hospital after post-mortem. Police had also succeeded to arrest one of the accused.
The body of the deceased would be brought to his native village soon for the cremation, and all required formalities were being fulfilled in Crete with the help of the gurdwara committee and other Punjabis residing there, she said.
