Deputy chairman of the planning commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia said that with an aim to push the ongoing development work in the country, quarterly targets have been fixed for various ministries for the first time.

He was in Amritsar with his wife on Sunday to pay obeisance at Harmandar Sahib.

While talking to reporters, Ahluwalia said, "Targets have been fixed in the areas of infrastructure, power and transport. Quarterly targets for all the ministries involved in the development projects have been set and the reports will be monitored and discussed at various levels, including the PMO."

He said, "If there is a problem with any project at any level, it ill be informed to the PMO to reach a solution. This all is done to ensure that development projects are completed on time without much hiccups."

Ahluwalia also stressed that there was a need to improve the marketing strategy for agricultural produce, including vegetables. "Private buyers must be encouraged too," he said.

He also said that effective steps are being taken to improve the economy of the country, which is in "some difficulty".
