With the tight security arrangements in place, police prevented any untoward incident even as more than 20,000 followers of Sant Rampal thronged the city on Wednesday.
The followers of Sant Rampal, who was scheduled to appear before the Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday but failed to do so, descended upon the city in his support.
As many as 4,000 Chandigarh Police personnel, including para-military force and four companies each from Punjab and Haryana, were deployed at the sensitive locations such as Punjab and Haryana high court, Sector-25 Rally Ground, Zirakpur and Panchkula barriers.
As many as eight DSPs and 26 inspectors were entrusted with the job of overseeing the security arrangements in their respective areas. Besides, water cannon, bomb and dog squad, and tear gas vehicles were also deployed.
For restricting movement of followers, the administration had already imposed section 144 across the city. The followers were stationed at Sector 25 Rally ground.
Traffic snarls made life difficult for commuters and a large number of vehicles got stuck in the traffic on border of the city when followers of Rampal were leaving the city.
Despite police force deployed for manning the traffic, most area remained clogged with vehicles.
To manage the traffic, the Chandigarh Police received helping hand from Panchkula and SAS Nagar Police.
Rahul Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Panchkula, said, “Though we did not stop anyone, our personnel were present at all strategic points to avoid any untoward situation.”
