Sarabdyal Singh, former personal assistant of Punjab animal husbandry minister Gulzar Singh Ranike and key accused in the border area development programme (BADP) fund scam in Amritsar's Attari constituency, approached the Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday, seeking bail.

Taking up his petition, the court headed by justice Paramjeet Singh issued a notice of motion to the Punjab government for filing its reply by July 15. He has sought bail in an FIR registered on October 26, 2012, under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, at the vigilance bureau (VB) police station, Amritsar.

The Amritsar district court had on May 3 dismissed his bail petition in the case. The petitioner has been in the Amritsar central jail ever since the Punjab VB arrested him on October 20 last year from Nainital (Uttarakhand). He was on the run after the trial court issued non-bailable warrants against him for allegations of fund embezzlement.

The petitioner informed the court that the VB had falsely implicated him. The court was told that the investigation in the case was complete and nothing was to be recovered from him.

The VB had found that Sarabdyal had accumulated assets worth Rs 2.56 crore from the embezzled amount between July 2008 and September 2012. This included a house at Amritsar worth Rs 1 crore, a share in Rise Land School worth Rs 21 lakh, a plot in Ranjit Vihar, Amritsar, worth Rs 15 lakh, fixed deposit of Rs 1 lakh in HDFC Bank, Amritsar, and an investment of Rs 1.24 lakh in life insurance.
