Sarabdyal Singh, the PA of former Punjab cabinet minister Gulzar Singh Ranike, who has been accused of embezzlement, is ready to join investigations into the rural grants scam, provided that he is granted bail, the counsel of Sarabdyal Singh apprised an Amritsar court on Friday.

Following the arguments on the bail plea application of Sarabdyal Singh, the court of additional sessions judge Neelam Arora has fixed September 24 as next date of hearing.

During the arguments, Ajay Vermani said the administration had flouted the norms as grant cheques are never to be handed over to any person. "There is no evidence that my client, Sarabdyal, collected the cheques or went to banks."

Meanwhile, a deputy superintendent of police of the vigilance bureau, who was present in the court stressed that investigation was at an important stage and the arrest of Sarabdyal was important.

A case was registered against Sarabdyal on the complaint of the district administration. The complaint alleged that Sarabdyal, PA of former cabinet minister Gulzar Singh Ranike, had embezzled Rs 1.15 crore through 12 cheques. The cheques were allegedly encashed by opening fake accounts.

A couple of other people, including bank officials, have also been booked in the case. The investigations are with the vigilance bureau.
