The union minister of state for social justice and empowerment, Vijay Sampla, held a meeting with ministers and senior officers of the department of welfare and social security, Punjab and Haryana, to review the implementation of centrally-sponsored schemes. In the meeting, Punjab welfare minister Gulzar Singh Ranike demanded the state’s inclusion in the Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAGY).

Sampla assured Ranike that he would take special care to serve the interests of Punjab as a central minister and directed officers to ensure implementation of welfare schemes in a transparent manner, a spokesman here said.

Ranike stressed that despite having the largest percentage of scheduled caste population, Punjab had not been covered under the PMAGY and requested for inclusion of the state on priority basis.

Punjab health and family welfare minister Surjit Kumar Jyani sought central grants for establishing drug de-addiction centres in the state and also demanded the release of Rs3.5 crore as special assistance for construction of ramps, lifts and other facilities at the Regional Spinal Injury Centre in Mohali.
