On the run for a week, a Sector 15 resident facing trial in a rape case surrendered before a court here on Monday.
On April 8, the accused, Deepak, had escaped from police custody after undergoing an ultrasound at Government Multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16 (GMSH-16), for a checkup.
Deepak, 20, was lodged in Burail model jail. Sector 34 police had booked him after a girl had accused him of raping her in December 2012. On the morning of April 8, Deepak had complained of stomach ache. He was taken to GMSH-16 in a jail van by assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) Kuldeep and Sanjay after he complained of stomach ache.
After Deepak underwent an ultrasound, the policemen took him to the Sector 10 bus stop across the road from the hospital. While the three were awaiting for the police van, Deepak pushed the police personnel accompanying him and ran away.
ASI Kuldeep and constable Sanjay, who were accompanying the accused when he escaped, were later booked for negligence before suspending them and initiating departmental inquiry against them.
Meanwhile, the police have moved an application in court, seeking the production warrant of Deepak, who was remanded in judicial custody on Monday.
Mother alleges demand for money
The mother of Deepak, who escaped from police custody on April 8, on Monday alleged that the policemen accompanying her son to GMSH-16 had demanded money from him. "But, as my son did not have the money, he panicked and ran away," the undertrial's mother alleged.
