Condemning the rape of five-year-old in Delhi, information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari on Saturday said, "The police in this case had delayed the decision to trace the missing girl, which led to such a situation."

He said the mindset of Indian men needs to be changed and respect and care should be given to women. "The mentality of Indian men needs to be changed because as long as that does not happen, such heinous crimes will continue to occur. Although the Prime Minister has criticised the incident, he has also planned to improve and create stringent laws against rape accused," added Tewari.

The union minister was at his alma mater, St John's High School, to inaugurate a basketball court. He was all praise for the school and spoke about the importance of education.

Talking about the recent visit of Rahul Gandhi to Punjab, Tewari said, "The party is trying to strengthen its position at the grassroots level and is reaching out to the rural people to listen to their problems. Rahul has been constantly working towards achieving this goal and we hope that this transformation takes place."

Tewari said the Delhi gangrape case and the recent incident have made them sit up and realise that some action is required to be taken. "I think that this disturbing event and numerous cases like this need to be checked and stopped as soon as one can. The situation is being discussed and we will soon come up with some major solution to avoid such atrocities against women who are an integral part of our society."
