The police sent a 15-year-old girl, who had accused her brother of repeatedly raping her, to a shelter for abused women and children after she told a local court she did not feel secure staying with her family in Nayagaon.
The cops said the girl had frequently complained to her mother about the rape but the latter did not take her seriously. The girl had also told her teacher she was living in fear at her home as her family members did not take her complaint seriously. Sources said a medical examination of the girl confirmed sexual assault by penetration.
Neil Andrew Robert, chairman of the UT child welfare committee, said the girl’s emotional condition had stabilised and she had been temporarily put up in a shelter for women and children in Chandigarh. Navpreet Kaur, district child protection officer, SAS Nagar, said: “The Chandigarh child welfare committee informed us and we’ll start working soon.”
