Ratna appointed as President of Pb Pradesh Mahila Congress

Ratna was on Wednesday appointed as President of Punjab Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee in Chandigarh after her name was cleared by All India Congress Committee for this post.

Addressing the media in Chandigarh, Ratna, who is a daughter of freedom fighter late Manohar Singh Sidhu said that she would work for strengthening women cadre of congress party and mobilize them to work for implementation of various social legislations for female foeticide, minimum age of marriage and welfare of widows.

"Women empowerment and upliftment is possible only if she gets educated," she said while adding, "Mahila Congress would form Self Help Groups and micro credit finance facilities to empower women in Punjab."

She further said before Lok Sabha elections, another 50,000 members would be recruited by Punjab Mahila Congress during the state Mahila Congress Convention which is slated to be held shortly.

Post Graduate in Economics, Ratna has been the chairperson of Punjab State Social Welfare Board (2004-08) and Chairperson of Amritsar Improvement Trust (2003-05).

On this occasion, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Mohinder Singh Kaypee and Leader of Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal were also present.
