The Punjab government on Sunday kick-started a special scheme to provide free cycles to children of construction workers. Children of all labourers registered with the Punjab Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board would be eligible to avail the benefit.

This scheme is different from the one launched by the social security, women and child development department.

Stating this, Punjab labour welfare minister Chunni Lal Bhagat said the scheme covered only registered labourers’ children, both boys and girls studying in classes from 9 to 12, who have also been awarded scholarships from the board. However, these cycles are a benefit which can be availed only once in four years of study and only if the seekers were registered labourers for at least a year.
