The police have arrested a retired inspector of Punjab Police for allegedly molesting his 11-year-old help at his house in Dera Jagadhari village of SAS Nagar.

The accused has been identified as Abdul Rashid, 63. Dera Bassi SHO Gurjit Singh said the victim's mother, a resident of Dera Bassi, told them that she had a son and three daughters. Rashid, who enjoyed good relations with her family, asked her to send her youngest daughter to his house for housekeeping as his wife had recently undergone surgery. In return he offered to take care of her education, she claimed.

The woman further alleged that on Saturday when she went to his house, her daughter broke down in tears and complained against Rashid of molesting her, following which the woman approached the police.

The SHO said the victim was taken for medical examination that ruled out rape. Therefore, Rashid was booked under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested.

He was produced before a Dera Bassi court that sent him to Nabha jail on judicial remand, the cop added.
