Rishabh Sharda managed to stave off a strong challenge from Yashwardhan and defeated him in the final qualifying round to qualify for the main draw of the CLTAAITA National Ranking Rs I lakh tennis tournament for men and women, at CLTA Complex in Sector 10, on Tuesday.

High on confidence, Rishabh stepped on the court looking to make it to the main draw. However, his opponent made him sweat for every point and looked dangerous while playing from the baseline.

But Rishabh kept his nerve and produced a power-packed performance in the end to snub Yashwardhan’s challenge.

He managed to register a hard-fought 8-7(3) win in the tie-breaker to qualify for the main draw.

However, his practice partner and CLTA-mate Calvin Golmei was shown the exit door by top seed Basil Khuma, who came up with a dominant performance to beat his opponent.

Calvin failed to get going against Basil and managed to win just one game against the top seed. Basil won the match 8-1.

Meanwhile, another local player Paramveer Singh Bajwa also won his final qualifying round to enter the main draw. Paramveer scraped past Ominder 8-5.

Vikrant Dahiya, a trainee of Chandigarh Academy for Rural Tennis (CHART), also made it to the main draw following a hardfought 8-5 win over Arnav Goel.

Earlier, in the men’s qualifying fourth round, top seed Basil survived a scare but finally managed to pip Suraj Beniwal in a thriller to move to the final qualifying round.

Suraj came up with a clinical display and gave the top seed a run for his money.

However, he lost steam in the tie-breaker where Basil pressed the accelerator to walk away with the match.

Meanwhile, Gayatri Kumariah made a winning start in the women’s main draw as she got the better of Manu Sharma 8-6 in an engaging encounter.

Baani Singh also moved to the second round after the player registered a facile 8-2 win over Aastha Daqrguje in a one-sided contest.

Neeru, however, found a tough opponent in Himanshika who made her sweat for every point. But Neeru managed to see off her opponent and defeated Himanshika 8-7(4) in the tiebreaker.
