Riya Garg of RS Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, Ludhiana topped the Punjab School Education Board's (PSEB) Class-10 examination, the results of which were declared on Monday. She scored 97.69%.

Mahima Nagpal of the same school, and Pankush Mahajan of Bal Vidya Mandir High School, Nangal Kotli Mandi, Gurdaspur, shared the second spot with 97.23%. The third position was shared by four students - Jannat Preet Kaur, who was also from RS Model Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana; Gaganjot Kaur of SAV Jain Day Boarding Senior Secondary School, Hoshiarpur; Lokesh Mahajan of Vivekanand High School, Pathankot, and Muskan Garg of Shri Surajkund Sarvhitkari Vidya Mandir, Sangrur. They secured 96.92%.

For the first time, the PSEB has decided to give away cash prizes to the toppers - `1 lakh for the first position, `75,000 for the second and `50,000 for the third place. All seven toppers this year will be awarded the cash prize.

Girls in the state again outshone the boys, with a pass percentage of 79.6. Boys secured a pass percentage of 66.82. A total of 3,75,538 students appeared for the exam which was cleared by 2,71,196 students. The overall pass percentage this year, 72.25, was three per cent higher than last year's 69.32.

Government schools had a pass percentage of 71.76, which was four per cent higher than last year. Government-aided school have 65.01%; and private affiliated, associated and Adarsh schools have 73.12%.

With 64 students, Ludhiana has contributed the lion's share to the merit list of 384. However, only one student from Kapurthala and two from SAS Nagar districts made it to the list.

Addressing mediapersons, state education minister Sikander Singh Maluka admitted that the number of students appearing for the state board examination had gone down since last year because many students had shifted to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) system. He attributed the poor performance of students in the open-schooling category to strict invigilation and added that the board would be seeking explanation from teachers for the poor results. He said showcause notices would be issued to the teachers, particularly in SAS Nagar district where "teachers are afflicted by the VIP mindset due to proximity to Chandigarh".
