The body of Swaran Singh, who was killed in a road accident on Thursday allegedly involving the bus of the Dabwali Transport Company owned by the Badal family, was cremated at Behrampur Zimidara village near here on Saturday.
The body was cremated after the mediators, who reportedly effected the compromise on behalf of the bus company, paid a compensation of Rs 22.5 lakh to the family. Swaran's son Parvinder Singh lit the pyre.
The post-mortem was conducted by a board of doctors at the Rupnagar civil hospital. According to its report, the death was caused by internal injuries.
The cremation was slightly delayed after a few members of the sangharsh committee formed to spearhead the agitation on the issue did not allow the body to be taken for cremation, demanding that the copy of the FIR registered against the bus driver be shown to them and the promise for providing a government job to one of the family members must be given in writing.
Congress general secretary Ambika Soni visited the bereaved family and attended the funeral. Bahujan Samaj Party general secretary and MP Narinder Kashyap and Punjab unit president Avtar Singh Karimpuri also met the family.
Chamkaur Sahib MLA Charanjit Singh Channi, Kharar MLA Jagmohan Singh Kang, District Congress Committee president Harbhag Singh Saini, former president Amarjit Singh Saini, Zila Parishad member Harpreet Singh Basant, Chamkaur Sahib market committee chairman Harnek Singh Bhura, former Punjab Youth Congress president Bhupesh Sharma and Punjab Congress (OBC dept) chairman Gurinder Pal Singh Billa were among those present on the occasion.
