Ropar Beopar Mandal split when a faction elected Parvinderpal Singh Binta as its president during a general body meeting of the local traders held at Lehri Shah Mandir Rupnagar on Friday night.

Binta, also president of district Youth Akali Dal (urban), Rupnagar, was recommended for the post by district BJP vice-president Rajeshwar Jain and traders of various trade unions, who had participated in the general body meeting, agreed by raising their hands.Binta assured traders of working dedicatedly to protect their interests.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, various speakers, including karyana union president Mohinder Singh, milkmen union chairman Subhash Kakkar, cloth union president Prince Jolly, artisan welfare organisation president Shivjit Singh Mankoo and motor parts mechanical union president Kashmir Singh Hussainpur, criticised the functioning of Beopar Mandal president Paramjit Singh Makkar.

Neither Rupnagar MLA Daljit Singh Cheema nor Punjab health minister Madan Mohan Mittal attended the general body meeting.

It may be mentioned that the leaders of this faction of Beopar Mandal had met Mittal and Cheema regarding the election of the new president. Cheema had met both the factions of the mandal on July 3 to resolve the issue but failed. Thereafter, one faction decided to convene the general body meeting to elect the new president.
