An unidentified person managed to flee with Rs 1.4 lakh belonging to a customer at Axis Bank in the busy Phase 7 market of Mohali on Saturday.

The customer, Gurjant Singh, owns a saloon in town and was in the bank to deposit the cash. He said that a stranger in his 30s offered to help him when he was filling the deposit form in the bank.

The stranger held Gurjant’s cash as he went to the deposit counter, where the bank staff asked him to fill the permanent account number (PAN), which is now mandatory.

Gurjant said the deposit counter was in the basement of the bank and he had to go to the ground floor to collect the PAN card form. The cash was with the stranger when he went upstairs. In the meantime, the stranger left the bank with Rs 1.4 lakh.

When Gurjant returned to the basement and did not find the man, he raised the alarm and the police were informed.

Mataur station house officer (SHO) Mahesh Saini said that on receiving information from the police control room, a team was sent to the bank and efforts were on to trace the accused.
