The Punjab government has spent Rs 10.96 crore on the conservation of heritage buildings in the state from 2007 till the current year. Stating this on Sunday, tourism and cultural affairs minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur said the amount had been spent to restore 32 historical buildings.
He said the conservation of Mughal Sarai, Shambhu, had been done for Rs 75.32 lakh and the construction of car parking along with the Shambhu complex for Rs 40.30 lakh. A sum of Rs 86.91 lakh was spent on Sheesh Mahal in Patiala, landscaping of Charbagh, Patiala (Rs 1.01 crore), Rs 92.62 lakh on the conservation of Banasar Ghar, Patiala, and Rs 46.38 lakh on the conservation of Patiala's Shahi Samadhan.
In Amritsar, Rs 94.26 lakh were spent on the conservation of Attari Mahal and Samadhi Complex, Rs 54.50 lakh on the conservation of Pul Kanjari, development of Sarai Amanat Khan Complex (Rs 27 lakh), conservation of summer palace (Rs 10.65 lakh), conservation of civil defence deori (Rs 18.63 lakh), conservation of Rambagh Garden (Rs 15.62 lakh) and conservation of Rambagh Gate (Rs 7.78 lakh).
On the conservation of General Dyer's bungalow, Rs 1.13 crore were spent, Rs 27.92 lakh on the construction of parking at Dera Baba Nanak, and Rs 44.4 lakh on the conservation of Guru Ki Maseet, Sri Hargobindpur.
Environmental upgradation of Dargah Masania, Gurdaspur, was done at an expenditure of Rs 91.17 lakh; environmental upgradation of 19th-century church complex, Batala, for Rs 10.10 lakh; conservation of Maharaja Hira Singh Samadhi, Nabha, for Rs 65.76 lakh; conservation of the irrigation guest house, Ferozepur, for Rs 68 lakh; conservation of the Moorish mosque, Kapurthala, for Rs 17.34 lakh; landscape work at Shalimar Bagh, Kapurthala, for Rs 34.83 lakh; and conservation of Shahi Samadhaan, Kapurthala, for Rs 20.10 lakh.
Phillaur added that conservation work of Anglo-Sikh battle sites at Misriwal and Mudki was done for Rs 8.67 lakh and Rs 24.73 lakh, respectively.
The minister said conservation work of the Kothi near Banasar Bagh, Sangrur, was done for Rs 53.23 lakh, while conservation work of Baradari near Banasar Bagh was being carried out by spending Rs 41.3 lakh.
He added that the government was setting up state-of-the-art Jang-e-Azadi memorial at Kartarpur to highlight the contribution of freedom fighters; besides state-of-the-art memorial at Sri Ram Tirath Temple, Amritsar; Guru Ravidass memorial at Khuralgarh village, Garhshankar; and Swami Virjanand Memorial at Kartarpur.
