Two private company employees were reportedly robbed of Rs 13 lakh at gunpoint in Sector 5 here on Wednesday.

The incident took place when Jaswant Singh and Sanjay, both employed with Checkmate Group of Companies, after collecting cash from Zirakpur and Panchkula, were on their way to deposit it in a bank.

They collected Rs 13.17 lakh from Paras Down Town Square in Zirakpur, PC Jewellers and Aditya store in Sector 14 here and Vishal Mega Mart in Sector 5 here. The victims were travelling in a Maruti van without guard to a Sector-10 bank.

When they reached near Vishal Mega Mart, a white- coloured Ford Fiesta car overtook them and obstructed their way with their car. Two men, whose faces were covered with handkerchief, came up to them, flashed their pistols and snatched the bag containing the money. They fled the spot after committing the crime.

The police was informed and ACP Noopur Bishnoi, SHO of the Sector-5 police station, and ACP (Hq) Virender Sangwan reached the spot.

Jaswant Singh said the robbers were talking in Punjabi and he and Sanjay could not note down the number of the car.

Checkmate Group of Companies operates from the SAS Nagar office. They used to collect cash everyday from various business centres and deposit in their respective bank accounts. However, on Wednesday, their guard was on leave and they proceeded without any protection.
