The Punjab government on Wednesday submitted before the Punjab and Haryana high court that it had released Rs 45 crore to local bodies for providing disaster management equipment across the state. The submissions were made by financial commissioner, revenue, Punjab, Karan Avtar Singh before the bench of justice Augustine George Masih in a contempt of court case filed by Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab assembly, Sunil Jakhar.
The government also submitted that the amount would be disbursed to local governments within four weeks.
The counsel for the municipal council, Abohar, also submitted that the support staff for disaster management would be appointed within two months. Following the government submissions, the HC disposed of the case.
The HC had last week given one week's time to the government to release Rs 45 crore for providing disaster management equipment.
An amount of Rs 45 crore, sanctioned in February and again in October by the local bodies department, had not been released by the treasury to local bodies. The petitioner had approached the court, alleging that the state government had failed to utilise the money for the purpose despite directions from the HC.
