Two days after the wall of the railway underbridge (RUB) on the Bathinda-Mansa road collapsed, the state government on Monday suspended two executive engineers, a sub-divisional engineer (SDE) and a junior engineer (JE) of the Public Works Department (PWD) on the charge of dereliction of duty.
Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, PWD minister, said, "Executive engineers Manjeet Singh and Adesh Gupta, SDE Kimat Lal and JE Nishu Bansal have been suspended. These officers have been suspended since a panel of an RUB inaugurated at Bathinda in September last year, which was constructed under the supervision of these officials had collapsed due to heavy rain."
"The falling of the panel shows dereliction in performance of their duty, which would not be tolerated at any cost. During suspension period, the suspended officers will remain attach with the office of the chief engineer (HQ) at Patiala," added Dhillon.
The RUB remained closed since the collapse of its wall on Saturday and passersby and commuters had to suffer a lot.
Earlier, the state government had constituted a committee headed by technical advisor to chief minister, BS Dhaliwal, to inspect the causes that led to the wall collapse.
Bathinda SDM Damanjit Singh, chief engineer of PWD KK Garg and a railway official were other members of the committee.
On Sunday, Dhaliwal along with other members visited the RUB site and inspected the causes that led to the wall collapse. The PWD department withheld the payment of the contractors amounting Rs 40 lakh.
