Police on Friday registered a case against people involved in the demolition of liquor vend at Lakhmipur village near Rupnagar.
The case has been registered at Singh-Bhagwantpur police station under Sections 379(theft), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code against Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Karnail Singh Lakhmipur, Anju Bala, Jasmer Singh Cherrian, Roop Singh, Numberdar Prem Singh, Kupdeep Kaur, Gurkirpal Singh, Kulwant Singh and other unknown persons on complaint of liquor vend owner Harjit Singh.
It may be mentioned that the residents of various villages, mainly women, had demolished the liquor vend after the administration failed remove it as per their demand.
Meanwhile, Chamkaur Sahib Congress legislator Charanjit Singh Channi has condemned the registration of case against the villager, adding that a protest would be organised over the issue.
In a statement, he said there was no materials in the liquor vend and only kiosk was uprooted by the villagers.
He justified the action of women and villagers in demolishing the vend saying that women had done a great service to society by demolishing vend.
He further demanded that the prior consent of the panchayats concerned should be taken before opening liquor vends in the villages.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (1920) has also lauded the action of women in demolishing the liquor vend.
