Ex-servicemen of Rupnagar district held a rally at Maharaja Ranjit Singh Bagh here on Monday under the banner of Indian Ex-Services League, Punjab and Chandigarh, to press for their demand of 'One Rank One Pension' (OROP).

Hundreds of ex-servicemen, along with the widows of ex-soldiers, participated in the rally.

The protesters also burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and defence minister Manohar Parrikar. The veterans also passed a resolution to boycott all future government functions, including Independence Day and Republic Day, till their demand was met.

Addressing the rally, Brig Kuldeep Singh Kahlon (retd) said successive governments at the Centre had been overlooking their demand of 'One Rank One Pension'. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also failed to fulfil his promise.

Other speakers, including president of Rupnagar chapter of Indian Ex-Services League Lt Col Didar Singh (retd), Col Angad Singh (retd), Col Dyal Singh (retd), Commander Surmukh Singh, said the agitation would continue till their demand was accepted. They also decided to join the ongoing hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi over the issue.
