The SAD on Tuesday demanded criminal proceedings against former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Congress candidate for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, for his “derogatory, threatening and violence-provoking” statements against Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

The party lodged a complaint with the chief election commissioner and chief electoral officer of Punjab, saying that campaign speeches of the Congress leader could spoil the peaceful atmosphere in the state. Captain Amarinder had used derogatory language to describe Majithia and threatened the use “bullets” against him.

“These statements amount to character assassination, besides violation of the model code of conduct (for the elections),” Akali leader Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema said in his complaint. The party also demanded action against Captain Amarinder Singh over the alleged violation of the model code of conduct.

In a press statement issued here, the SAD accused Congress leaders of brandishing weapons and threatening to use laathis, khundas, daangs and even naked swords. “They are even threatening to march to Amritsar carrying weapons like an army of marauders. This is an affront to the holy city. At the same time, they are cribbing like cowards against powerful speeches of Majithia,” said SAD general secretary Harcharan Bains.

Referring to the complaint by Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira against speeches of SAD leaders, especially Majithia, the general secretary said: “It is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.”
