The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) national president and state deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday said that his party would independently contest elections to 35 seats in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in April 2017.

Sukhbir said that the SAD was hopeful of good results as it had identified 35 seats having considerable Punjabi population. He said the Punjabis, especially farmers, were facing lots of problems due to their non-representation in the state assembly.

SAD senior leaders Balwant Singh Ramuwalia, Prem Singh Chandumajra and Gulzar Singh Ranike have been chosen party observers for the UP state.

Similarly, Delhi unit party chief Manjit Singh GK and Manjinder Singh Sirsa would be the observers for West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Bihar and Chhattisgarh states.
