The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday asked a trial court to reconsider Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s application on a forensic examination of a letter in the 2002 rape case against him.
A single-judge bench, however, dismissed another petition of the dera head challenging the curtailment of the list of witnesses by the Central Bureau of Investigation trial court, Panchkula, in the same case. The detailed order is awaited.
The HC bench asked the CBI trial court to give Ram Rahim a hearing — before the final order in the rape case — on the forensic examination of the letter which he claimed was written by the sadhvi, praising him while leaving the dera. Later, this former female disciple had levelled allegations of rape against him. The dera head claimed the letter did not mention allegations of sexual exploitation. The sadhvi has denied writing it.
In 2002, anonymous letters addressed to then PM and the chief justice of the high court were circulated, alleging sexual exploitation of female followers at the Sirsa dera.
