The members of the Safai Karamchari Union, Chandigarh, held a protest against the anti-safai karamchari policies of the municipal corporation (MC) on Wednesday. The rally, which began from the office of medical officer, health, in Sector 17 culminated at the MC office which was gheraoed by the protestors.
While addressing to the gathering, union president Krishan Kumar Chadha criticised the policies that were against the safai karamcharis.
The union leaders alleged that MC had ignored their demands and the policies of partiality have been set for the employees. They demanded that procedure be set for permanent job to 134 family members of those employees who have expired during duty hours, and 1,328 backlog vacant posts may be filled up. They also said that the safai karamcharis who were working on contractual basis from the past so many years should be treated as permanent employees as per the Punjab Act, along with facility of dearness allowance (DA).
The union warned the administration and MC officials that if their demands were not fulfilled at the earliest then protest activities would be initiated in more power in the entire city and the garbage pick-up van would to enter or leave the city.
