Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday urged Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, seeking his intervention to compensate Sikh families who suffered huge losses during the recent violence in Saharanpur district.

In a telephonic conversation, Badal told Yadav that the Sikh brethren living in Uttar Pradesh had contributed tremendously to the state’s development in general and that of Saharanpur district in particular. He said the UP government must ensure the security of Sikhs so that this minority community does not get a feeling of alienation.

Yadav assured Badal that the UP government was committed to ensuring the well-being of every person living in the state, adding that every effort was being made to maintain peace and amity, a spokesman said here.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Sikhs from Saharanpur, led by Gurpreet Singh Bagga, called on the Punjab chief minister at his residence here on Wednesday, giving details of the situation in Saharanpur. They sought Badal’s intervention for safeguarding the interests of Sikhs there, the spokesman added.
