The court awarded three-year rigorous imprisonment to four persons including three former estate department employees for fraudulently selling an economically weaker section (EWS) flat in Sector 25, on Tuesday.
The three former employees of the estate office include Gian Chand (dismissed), Kapil Dev (retired) and Harjit Singh (retired). They were convicted under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 120-B of the IPC and Section 13 (2) of the Prohibition of Corruption Act. They have been fined Rs 35,000 each.
The fourth convict is the buyer, Chedi Lal. Apart from serving three years in jail, he will also have to pay a fine of Rs 30,000.
The verdict was announced by the court of additional district and session judge Roopam Singh.
According to the charges, in December 12, 2007, Chedi Lal along with Gian Chand, Kapil Dev and Harjit Singh forged the documents of allotment of EWS flat and took a flat under his possession. However, the matter came to the light and Chandigarh vigilance department conducted probe. In May 2012, all of them were arrested. The vigilance report had stated that the flat was sold and purchased on forged documents in connivance with the UT estate officials.
