The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday expelled 14 rebel members, who had defied the party and are contesting as independents in the upcoming polls scheduled for February 22. Those expelled are mostly from the real estate baron Kulwant Singh’s group. Besides Singh himself, his son Sarbajeet, who is contesting independently from ward no 25 has also been expelled. Kulwant had contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 from Fathegarh Sahib on a SAD ticket. Senior leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia said, as of now, a preliminary list of those who stand expelled had been prepared and a final list will be issued on Tuesday.

Kulwant Singh’s group members were not given the ticket, they all decided to contest as independent candidates. Meanwhile those including RP Sharma and Kulwant’s son Sarabjeet Singh were given the ticket by the BJP and the SAD, respectively. They then returned to join the group. At least 36 members joined Kulwant Singh and members opted for the bucket as the symbol and now are known as the bucket party.

Ramoowalia said the list had been shared with SAD president Sukhbir Badal, who had taken a final call on the expulsion.

His office, later confirmed, that a letter was being sent to Dera Bassi MLA NK Sharma to come and campaign against party rebels.

The move assumes significance as it remains an open secret that NK Sharma and Kulwant Singh are close and have been at loggerheads with Prem Singh Chandumajra and Balwant Singh Ramoowalia.

Those expelled include RP Sharma, who had returned the ticket from the BJP to contest as independent. The others are Amteshwar Kaur, denied a ticket by the BJP, and Parkash Wati, contesting on a BJP ticket. Amteshwar Kaur said, “I have never been an Akali.” RP Sharma said, “I had left the SAD in 2012 and I am now their executive member.”

SAD’s loyalty test for Sharma too

Dera Bassi MLA NK Sharma, alleged to have helped Kulwant Singh and his group members in filing nominations, has been summoned and asked to campaign against the Kulwant group to prove his loyalty.
