Offices, boards, corporations, banks, government, non-government organisations, commercial and industrial establishments in the state will remain closed on Wednesday so that employees can cast votes for the Lok Sabha polls.
District electoral officer-cum-deputy commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu said Sarabjeet Singh, general secretary of Vyapaar Mandal, has also intimated him about their decision to close markets in SAS Nagar till 5pm so that shopkeepers and workers can exercise their right to vote.
Sidhu added that shopping malls falling under the district jurisdiction, including Best Price in Zirakpur, Metro Cash and Carry India Zirakpur, Big Bazaar, Big Cinema, North Country Mall, Kharar, and other multiplexes will also remain closed.
Explaining about the arrangements for the polling day, Sidhu said all necessary preparations were in place at SAS Nagar and Kharar of Anandpur Sahib constituency, and Dera Bassi, which falls under Patiala constituency.
As many as 2,752 polling staff members have been deputed at 688 polling stations who will remain available at their respective booths from 7am to 6pm. There as many as over 6 lakh voters, out of which around 3.26 lakh are male, and 2. 90 lakh are female. Around 20,000 youngsters have been enrolled in the district for the first time - 9,109 being between the age group of 18 -19 years.
