While addressing a press conference, Patiala range inspector general of police (IGP) Paramjeet Singh Gill claimed that the accused, Manpreet Singh Mani and Harjeet Singh alias Harry, both residents of Landran village in SAS Nagar, were members of the same gang that they busted in connection with the Axis bank cash van robbery.

Claiming that the duo had confessed to have committed several other robberies in Khuda Ali Sher and other areas, the IGP said the accused had used a Chevrolet Optra that they had stolen from Phase 11 in SAS Nagar a day before the dacoity at Rajat Jewellers, Panchkula, in July 2014.

Gill said Manpreet was involved in the Panchkula dacoity, whereas Harjeet Singh was involved in a similar incident in Khuda Ali Sher where they robbed a cash van. However, in both the incidents, gang's kingpin Ranpreet alias Rana, who was currently in police custody, was the mastermind, he added.

While giving details of the recoveries, Gill said the police had recovered the Chevrolet Optra car used in Panchkula dacoity from Bhakhra river near Samana. He claimed that the police had also recovered diamond jewellery stolen from Rajat Jewellers from the possession of the gang members.

He said besides the duo, eight members of the gang had already been arrested, but two others, Surinder Pal alias Rinku, resident of Sector 91, SAS Nagar, and Gurjant Singh alias Janta, native of Gobindgarh village in SAS Nagar, were on the run.

Gill said the accused had revealed another name, Birkar Singh, native of Sadulgarh in Mansa, who had the remaining stolen jewellery with him.
