Following a tipoff, sleuths of the Central Investigating Agency along with the Zirakpur police conducted a raid at an Zirakpur apartment and arrested six men allegedly engaged in betting during Monday's IPL cricket match. 14 cellphones, a voice recording machine, three laptops and Rs 3 lakh in cash, reportedly the earnings from a previous betting session, were seized.
The police said the flat had been taken on rent by Naveen and the six men, all in their late twenties, had been engaged in betting activities for a while. They have been identified as Naveen Shegal and Sunny Sharma, both residents of Manimajra; Vishal Kapoor, a resident of Sector 15, Panchkula; Gagandeep and Harpreet, both residents of Abohar; and Karan Chawla, a resident of Ferozepur.
SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said: "All the 14 mobile phones found at the flat were connected to one device through which and bets were being taken. We're questioning the accused about their accomplices in Jaipur and also trying to contact their customers."
The six men, who were booked under sections 420 &120B of the Indian Penal Code, were produced in a local court on Tuesday and remanded to two-day police custody.
